HDB renovation timing: allowed hours for noisy and general works

HDB allows general renovation from 8am to 6pm, but noisy works such as hacking, drilling and tile cutting only from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. Here’s how the rules work in practice.

In short: In HDB flats, general renovation works are allowed from 8am to 6pm, while noisy works such as hacking, drilling and tile cutting are allowed only from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. Noisy works are not allowed on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays, and should not run more than three days in a row.

HDB’s published guidelines describe general works from 8am to 6pm and noisy works from 9am to 5pm on weekdays only. Some third-party sites give different Saturday rules, so confirm the current rules for your flat before scheduling weekend work.

What counts as noisy work

  • Hacking or demolishing walls
  • Removing floor or wall tiles and screed
  • Drilling into walls, floors or ceilings
  • Cutting tiles on site

Other timing rules that affect your schedule

  • Three consecutive days: noisy works should not run for more than three consecutive days.
  • Two power tools: only two approved hand-held power tools, or equivalent, may be used at once for demolition.
  • Neighbour notice: your contractor must notify immediate neighbours at least three days before renovation starts.
  • Permit first: hacking any wall needs HDB’s written approval before work starts. See the HDB renovation permit guide.

Planning a renovation around the noisy-work window

  1. Front-load the noisy works. Hacking and tile removal come first, so book them early in the schedule.
  2. Split long hacking jobs. Plan noisy works in blocks of up to three days, with quieter tasks in between.
  3. Use weekends for quiet work. Measuring, cleaning and quiet installation can fill non-noisy days, within the allowed hours.
  4. Build in a buffer. Public holidays remove noisy-work days, so check the calendar when setting the handover date.

How long the noisy phase usually takes

For a typical HDB flat, hacking walls and floor tiles often takes two to four working days, depending on the area and screed thickness. See hacking floor tiles: cost and time for more detail.

If neighbours complain

Most complaints come from noise outside the allowed hours, debris in common corridors, or no advance notice. Keeping to the 9am–5pm weekday window, bagging debris daily and giving notice early prevents most of them.
